THE PRE-LIM TASK- 'The lost Boy' By Darren, Perpetual and I

For this pre-lim task I worked with Darren and Perpetual together we all worked quite well and i think made quite a good short film however it was in no way perfect as there was a lot of things we could have tightened up on when editing and even when we were shooting it. Firstly when shooting it we should have thought a lot more about the location we choose as it restricted us as the stairwell we shot on didn't really allow us enough room for a good shot reverse shot or an over the shoulder shot, this showed in the final product because right up until the main bit of action we had quite a good selection of different shots then it went a little static when the interesting conversation was happening which made it seem visually unattractive especially as the eye was being drawn to the big blue door in the background. This was a silly mistake but we have learnt for next time location is the first thing you should think about and try not to let it limit you in anyway, as it is a lot easier to just change location then it is to work with what you have. When editing our footage it was done quite easily has we only did a few take although it was quite tricky getting the match on match shot to look right as the first time we did it, it was a little off however we sorted it which was done easily enough. The shot at the top of the stairs really didn't look right at all as only the very top of Perpetuals head was and really if it was going to be in shot it should of been her whole head and shoulders really, the composition was all wrong. I have also learnt that once i have the shoot i need, i should leave the camera and don't do any zooms or anything unless completely necessary as it is simply not needed. My group and i found a focus zoom quite difficult and failed to do one, i think maybe for this particular film it isn't important however more practice is definitely needed. The titles in my opinion took the most time as we wanted them to look good and not tacky it was a good learning experience on how to animate titles, our titles aren't perfect but we know how we could improve them to make the animation of the writing rubbing off the board look smoother and given the time we could do it. Overall I think our film wasn't that bad as there were no major disaster and we have all learnt what areas we can improve on for next time.

Tetra Vaal By Neill Blomkamp

This film by Neill Blomkamp is a perfect example if his own personal style. After watching a few of his short films i have noticed he often mixes reality with special digital effects and robots it is something very unique and is constantly tricking the audience and builds intrigue as to how this is being done in this surreal world he has created. In this film in particular it is quite obvious Neill Blomkamp favours shooting in a documentary style as also in his short film 'Yellow' this style is demonstrated. Usually Neill Blomkamp doesn't have a clear narrative it is just and ideas, this film however actually has a narrative and like most short films has a hiding meaning within it as he repeatedly asks the question 'what if?'.This film is a little unconventional for a short film as normally short films are quite low budget however this short film as well as other short films of by this director look like they were shot on quite a high budget. I quite like this film by Neill Blomkamp as i think the whole idea is quite weird and kind of sci-fi although that is what i think i like about his individual style.

Since then Neill Blomkamp has made quite a collection of short films as well as another feature length film due for release in 2011.

'One Day' By Michel Gondry

I thought this film was most humorous, the whole narrative is just mad. Who would think of something like this as it is a man who's poo follows him around-totally nuts! however it is so typical of Michel Gondry. The beginning of the short film is quite normal an then the 'human turd' comes out from the toilet it is constantly challenges expectations the audience stay amused and interested throughout as they never know what's going to happen next. Michel Gondry often uses a lot of styles that other directors  wouldn't use for example in this film the fourth wall is broken and the characters are addressing the audience and keeping them engaged. The ending is like the cherry on top as it takes another turn as the turd turns in to a Nazi, which i found quite weird however with is being a short films and conventionally short films often have a deeper meaning and maybe this one had something to do with racial discrimination as it is also mentioned earlier by the turd it is just an idea but that was my conclusion on this quirky short film.

Michel Gondry-Short Film Director

Michel Gondry born 8th May 1963 is a french film, commercial and music video director and an Academy Award-winning screen writer. He is noted for his inventive and very individual visual style and manipulation of mise en scene. He's made music videos for artist such as Bjork, Paul McCartney, The rolling Stones and even Kanye West plus many more.

After watching a few of Michel Gondry's Short films i have come to the conclusion that he is very out there as far as directors go and quite weird however it is his total individuality that i like as it is almost like his trademark as you can always tell his work from other film makers as it is very very eccentric and peculiar and he really challenges the audiences expectations of his films. To view some of Michel Gondry's short films and music videos follow these links here- Michel Gondry's Short Films - Michel Gondry's Music Videos

The Stairwell by Shane Meadows

The Stairwell is a 40 second short film made by Shane Meadows in 2005 for the Nokia Shorts competition of which was shot completely on a mobile phone.

-I like the Disjointed angles seen at the beginning of the film as they give off a sense of uneasiness to the audience and the fact that Shane Meadows has chosen to introduce the characters from behind was done on purpose as it builds up mystery about the character.
-The dark blue lighting adds to the slightly apprehensive atmosphere, as not everything can be seen that well, it is quite gritty.
-The Camera Angles are slightly distorted and keeps the characters quite mysterious which is quite good as it lets the audience have there only feeling on the character despite him looking a little dodgy.
-A journey is being shown through a number of different camera angles which ultimately just make the whole film seem more interesting.
-The whole film is quite eery and the music used just adds more and builds up the tension.
-This films really shows of Shane Meadows individual style as a director as he managed to hold the audiences attention successfully.

Shane Meadows-Short Film Director

Shane Meadows is a self-taught film maker from the Midlands, UK. He dropped out of school before reaching his O-Levels originally shane set out to be a infamous criminal master mind of legendary proportions, although this did not go quite to plan and after being humiliated in court when his chargers for theft of a breast pump from Boots Chemist were read out Shane decided to put his criminal ways behind him and put his energy in to film making.

In 1994 Shane began working as a volunteer to the Nottingham based Intermedia Film and Video Ltd., of which he was able to camcorders and the use of editing equipment in exchange for working there for free. Shane's family go involved and helped him shoot his first video experiments understandably they were quite wary at first though.

After making quite a few short films, Shane created an event called Six of the Best'. Where anyone could bring along their short films and for a small fee have them screened to a small audience. This event was due to Shane's frustration of not having any real film festivals or venues to screen his films. This event grew in popularity and now is an international video festival called 'Flip Side'.

In 1994 'Where's the money, Ronnie' was made by Shane Meadows which was the first film to attracts the attention of the film industry. The acclaim won by this short lead Shane to be given the opportunity of making a documentary for Channel 4's 'Battered Britain' series. The film was called 'King of the Gypsies' (which can be watched if you follow this link )- 'King Of The Gypsies'

From this opportunity Shane made enough money to make 'Smalltime', It was a prime example of Shane's philosophy for aspiring film makers- 'Stick to what you know, and you won't go far wrong'. 'Smalltime' was written on Shane's lunch breaks whilst volunteering at the Nottingham based Intermedia Film and Video Ltd. and was written and the basis to be improvised. 'Smalltime' won acclaim at many European film festivals, it was so favorable to potential investors and distributors, Shane soon had the chance to make his first full length feature film.  'Twentyfour Seven'.

From  'Twentyfour Seven' to the 2006 film 'This is England', Shane has progressed to making heartfelt films that attract an ever growing collection of fans.

Maya Deren-'Meshes of the Afternoon'

Maya Deren-American Avant-Garde Filmmaker

Maya Deren is an Avant-Garde director her most popular work was produced during the 1940's and 1950s. She takes an anti-mainstream stance with her films, she promotes the idea of artistic license and creative freedom all of which are very obvious in her work. One of her most prominent films is called 'Meshes of the afternoon' made in 1943.

Here are some of the class notes we made when watching 'Meshes of the afternoon' (Watch it for yourself below)
-This film is like poetry as it can be interpreted in to lots of different ways.
-It has  a circular narrative- some may have found this very repetitive.
-The way it has been filmed gives of the idea that it may be a dream or in a dream world.
-There is lots of significant imagery i.e a flower, a knife, a telephone etc. It isn't clear what seeing all these random objects me but is is up to the audience to draw there on conclusion as to what they may symbolize as they most likely have a deeper meaning.
-There is the constant contrast between happy and sad.
-The sound effect aren't too great as they didn't make the film seem that real at all which maybe could have been done on purpose as the whole film is quite surreal although the fact that the sound effects aren't to great is actually just a reflection of the time that this film was made.
-A lot of different kinds of tensions are built up throughout this film.
-The fact that there is no narrative structure shows just how very experimental this film is.
-The music used is very sacrificial.
-When the second half of the film is watch the story become a little clearer, as the audience we begin to understand and think that the women in the film is very suicidal in which she is fighting with herself, the key that come from her mouth is like the answer almost as if the right answers lie within her. Furthermore thins kind of story line is very Avant-Garde as it is  a very deep issue that has been shown without you any proper dialogue or anything unlike a mainstream film.

'Avant-Garde'

Avant-Garde is a french saying which when used in English refers to people that are experimental, innovative and cutting edge especially in the art, culture and politics.

Avant-Garde expresses pushing of the boundaries of what is perceived as the norm or just the plain old ordinary generally in the cultural world.

The notion of the existence of the Avant-Garde is considered by some to be a statement of modernism, as distinct from postmodernism. Many artists have aligned themselves with the avant-garde movement and still continue to do so.

The concept of Avant-Garde refers exclusively to marginalized artists, writers, composers and thinkers whose work is not only opposed to mainstream commercial values, but often has an abrasive social or political edge therefore to most people would seem weird as it is something most people just aren't used to seeing.

Some examples of Avant-Garde directors are:-
-Maya Deren- 'Meshes of the afternoon' (1943)
-Ernie Gehr- 'Serene Velocity' (1970)
-Tony Conrad- 'The Flicker' (1965)
-Jonas Mekas- 'Walden (diaries, Notes and sketches)' (1969)

The short list about is just a few however if you follow this link you can see more Avant-Garde directors and there work:- Avant-Garde Directors

La Sortie de l'Usine By The Lumiere Brothers - The First Ever Film

La Sortie de l'Usine was the first ever film to be made by the Lumiere Brothers in 1895. It was a major break through in the industry as it was the first ever piece of moving imagery ever seen, audiences were amazed. Its a piece of history and after watching this it is obvious just how far the film making has come since this break through.

The History Of Short Film

10 Minutes By Ahmed Imamovic

10 Minutes is a short film contrasting the life of a Japanese tourist in to the life of  a Bosnian family during the Bosnian war in the war-torn city of Sarajevo less then 10 minutes away.

The film starts off in black and white with non-digetic Italian music. It seems quite dated, old fashion and dull  although portraying a very light hearted atmosphere which shows the audience this film is going to most likely be this same atmosphere throughout. The Japanese tourist is seen taking pictures of his beautiful surroundings and looking with some amazement, then the seen is immediately set as there are a few establishing shots of famous  ancient landmarks in Rome such as the coliseum so the audience know he is in a tourist in Rome.  At this point it is quite unusual for a short film as everything so far seems to making sense and is quite structured and it is quite clear as to what is going to on- there is nothing weird or confusing apart from the fact the film is called 10 minutes, so it is clear that maybe something is going to happen to relate to the title.

The film switches quite quickly to full colour which is quite a shock at first as it wasn’t expected but it seems a lot better as the colours are quite rich, warm and homely such as yellows and greens it makes the audience feel as if they are there in Rome.  The scene looks like the perfect little world where everyone just minds their and business and is just polite to everyone around them however it seems almost too perfect. The fact that there isn’t any dialogue and all that can be heard is little conversations in the background gives of a slightly underlying uneasy atmosphere as if something is going to happen, still unknown to the audience.

The story really takes off when the Japanese tourist goes in to a photography shop after reading a sign in Italian. Many people watching this film may have been quite confuse as the sign was in Italian and not everyone can read Italian so us as an audience are quite intrigued at this point especially as the main thing that stood out on the sign was the number 10.

The first bit of dialogue in this short film happens when the tourist goes in to the photography shop, it is quite humorous and the atmosphere is still very light hearted. The tourist enquires about his photos being able to be developed in 10 minutes, the shop assistant says this Is fine and tells the tourist to wait of come back in 10 minutes. The Japanese tourist steps out the shot and the camera slowly pans up to the street clock which reads 11.50 which is another connection to the title- ‘10 minutes’.

At this part in the film the whole films take a complete turn as to what the audience would have expected as through some clever camera techniques the scene changes to a different clock reading 11.50. this now confuses the audience as it is totally different to where they just were it is almost as if it is a different film its totally random however very typical of a short film as they usually don’t really have a structure.

It is very dark and dingy looking as if it was maybe back in time or just a less fortunate family, this is quite obvious with the way the mum, baby and small boy are dressed. it looks as if it was shot at least 20 years before the first scene we just saw. The sounds are quite dramatic as not much can really be heard apart from the baby crying, this could maybe symbols sadness and the hard time this family is going through at this particular time. The use of the subtitles is quite significant as it forces the audience to concentrate further as then they might understand the film better. The atmosphere is very eary and uneasy, it makes you feel very unsafe. The boy who looks about 11 years old is sent out to get some bread.

As he walks on his journey to get bread the audience begin to feel quite anxious for this boy as he seems to walk down very dark corridors before he actually gets out on to the outside of his flats. As he gets out side is again I still a very dark and cold looks location it is almost as if it is a ghost town there isn’t many people around and the only thing that can be heard is the general sounds off outside and for this boy it seems to be quite quiet. However for the boy is seems to be quite normal for him and he doesn’t seems to feel unsafe it is the norm for him.

When we see where and how the boy is getting bread it becomes clearer to the audience as to what is going on. It shows that this is perhaps a country maybe going through a war as there is rationing happening and people seems very desperate for simple things like water.  Although our theories are confirmed when the boy starts talking to two army men who look like they are guarding the town, it has obviously been happening for a on time as the army men talk to the boy as if they know him.

Although the atmosphere is quite tense as the audience aren’t to sure what is going to happen next the film takes a shocking turn as all of a sudden large exaggerated bomb explosions can be heard it is something the audience maybe expected at some point but the way is is done is very harsh and violent and the audience really feel for the by as it is a mad rush for him to get home to his family despite being in a lot of danger himself.

When he reaches home it is too late as he finds him mother and father both dead of which they are both clearly shown to the camera with blood streaking down their faces this was most likely done for the compete shock factor and to give it a further sense of realism as this is what can happen and does happen tin there types of countries  the image of the clock from the beginning is then shown again showing showing 12 o’clock as the 10 minutes have gone by this boys entire family has been wiped out from a war that has nothing to do with him . the scene then reverts back too the Japanese tourist in Rome where after 10 minutes he has picked up his newly developed photographs and looks at them with a smile and then is able to just carry on with is life.

I think this short film is excellent as it shows in quite a simple but very effective and hard hitting was the things people take for granted and it really makes you appreciate the things you have because as we see they can be taken away so very quickly. This film was most likely made for his reason to give this message out to the audience and also just to make them more aware of life itself and how fast and can be taken away.

'Skin Deep' By Yusif Ali Khan 1 of 2

'Skin Deep' By Yusif Ali Khan 2 of 2

'Skin Deep' By Yusif Ali Khan
-I found this film very powerful with the issues that were raised, it it quite a typical short film as it doesn't abide by any rules and i don't think was made for a profit but more to raise awareness to racial abuse and it also gives out a message to the audience telling them they should be proud of who they are as they don't want to end up having a breakdown like Romo.
-The film begins with the Asian boy looking at him self shouting in the mirror, he uses the racist term 'Paki' it is ironic as the boy is asian so it intrigues the audience as he seem to have hate for his own race.
-The whole film is very gritty and the lighting seems to be very dark and dull throughout, this seems to maybe be a reflection on Romo's life.
-The audience definitely like Romo as they take pity on him and feel sorry for him as he desperately want to change what he is just to fit in to his community although he has no control and can't help the fact he is asian.
- subtle things Romo does such as keep flattening his hair, taking the back alleys around his estate and even the way he talks using works like 'ite mate' show that he is clearly ashamed of what he his and show is desperation to be white.
-The use of the flash back of Romo's past are good as it gives the audience an incite to what has happened in the past so they then know why he is the way he is.
-Romo is quite cowardly as he let's his younger sister take the racial abuse from the people on the estate and just lets her walk past them on her own, he also shows he's spineless when he shouts abuse at another asian boy when he is around his new white friends. As bad as this looks to the audience they can still understand the anxiety he must have been feeling inside as he abandoned his own race.
-The ending is the total climax of the film as it is the most hard hitting part as we see Romo viciously and violently shave off his hair, where the noise is very exaggerated giving a sense of realism and the audience can really feel his pain.

'Steal Away' By Charles McDougall (1 of 2)

'Steal Away' By Charles McDougall (2 of 2)

'Steal Away' By Charles McDougall Lesson Notes

-When this short film begins the audience immediately think that this film is going to be about some kind of heist, the music n the background and the 'gangster' looking man we can see parts of -the man is actually mystery at this point
-The title is quite subtle but is kept with in the story.
-The P.O.V shots make the audience feel part of the film.
-Whoever this man is he is a religious man as there is a cross tied around the car mirror -it is quite a subliminal object as at this point it is unknown to the audience how important religion is in this short film.
-The action happens 1 minute in to the film it happened so quickly it is quite difficult to take in exactly what has happened
-Even after the action the Characters are still kept quite mysterious
-Suspense and anxiety is built up very well as a exaggerated gun sot is heard but it isn't revealed straight away who got shot, to emphise this everything is slowed down so now the audience can realise what is going on and what has just happened.
-There is a shot of the women looking back hoping it wasn't her boyfriend who got shot, in the frame the stations signs as visible reading 'way out' could this possibly be an underlying message to this women
-The women's whole domina seems to change as she is reunited with her man.
-The lighting gets darker as they begin to run through the underground could this could maybe mean something bad is going to happen and there is danger ahead
-It is confirmed to the audience that these to people are in fact a couple and are very much in love with each other-this is shown through there body language when they are together and kiss.
-They both seem very childish over the money as it is clear and the man Michael even says we can't even spend it because it was not stained.
-The red colour of the money is quite symbolic showing blood money as it was stolen and somebody has died for it.
-It also become clear these to people aren't hardcore criminals and they mugged the man for the thrill of it and it wasn't planned at all and they didn't know what was in the case they stole.
-The women seems a lot more childish then the man and perhaps a little naive
-They are a very in love couple and seem very intimate-they can't keep their hands off each other
-These two people seem very weird as although someone just got shot, they don't care and seem very excited from taking the risk.
-As they are on the desolate dark underground station it is thought maybe there plans have gone wrong as they weren't expecting the train
-The train approaches very quietly and slowly it also looks as if no one is one it, it is a white train which is very unusual, it is as if it's a ghost train.
-When the couple get on the train it seems as they have just stepped on to a quite busy late night tube. There is normal looking people on this tube however it is a scary coincidence that there happens to be a preacher on the tube talking about sins as they have just committed one and a boy washing peoples feet and cleansing them.
- The Bible the preacher is holding is red-red symbolises bad things i.e. Murder, blood etc.
-The couples reaction on their faces show them to be quite freaked out by this all the girl more then Michael.
-The lighting is very light on the tube everything seems very clean.
-Money is also a theme i this films as the women offers money to the boy washing her feet and he refuses-it showing the idea that money can pay off anything.
-The preacher begins to sing a song of which he repeats the words 'Steal away' this not only connects with the title of the film but it is weird as they just stole off somebody.
-The man Michael clearly starts to feel guilt as he starts to wash the hurt boys feet
-At this point the audience must be feeling quite confused as this short film seems to be changing genre and really isn't what they thought it would be and the crucifix at the beginning was a crucial subliminal sign as to what this film was.
-When the audience see Michael watching the boys feet they begin to feel differently about him and realise he isn't a cold criminal.
-It is clear Michael's girlfriend has problems letting him go and when she seems him washing the boys feet she looks at him with quite a disgusted face.
-As Michael washes the boys feet lights start flashing and violently flickering everywhere on the tubes carriage, it is almost like voodoo or the pass over in the Bible although no body seems to really notice it happening.
-It is almost as if they have been cleansed of there signs as after the lights turn on properly the women and Michael's clothes a all clean and there is not trace of the red dye.
-It to them must have seemed like a miracle has happened ad they have got away with they crime and have a second chance.
-They seem to be new people when they step off the tube as they give the money to a homeless person.
-when they get off the tube and go towards the barriers Michael is let through however the women isn't she is told to wait in another line where the other people who got refused stand-the penny then drops for the audience as being on that tube was like judgement day.
-Michael goes up the escalator and goes to heaven of which still isn't the heaven we would all think off as it seems quite bare and cold- it was infact Michael that got shot he has escaped hell that is earth and is in a better place and was cleansed of his sin unlike his girlfriend who now is in hell on earth and has to deal with the consequences HOWEVER this can be seen in a different way as it can also be thought the girl has been given a second chance to live her life and do the right thing.
-This film had a very religious thought it is also thought that Michael bared resemblance to Jesus as he died for his girlfriend like Jesus died for us as now she doesn't really have to deal with the consequences as he has died and if he didn't they may have got caught.

'About A Girl' By Brain Percival

'About A Girl' By Brain Percival - Lesson Notes
-At the beginning of this short film, the title comes up as a text message, as the keypad tone is heard. This show this film could be quite modern and maybe directed at a young audience.
-The audience then see the silhouette of a young girl singing and dancing it is quite eery, the lighting is quite dark which seemed quite unusual for a girl like her to be out on her own so late. The girl seems very innocent singing Britney spears 'stronger' her identity is being kept from the audience, it builds some mystery and intrigue about her.
-When the girl is finally revealed it is a total shock to the audience as she is totally not what is expected. She is a very confident 'chavy' girl this comes across in the way she is speaking and the was she is dressed. she is quite a 'hard' girl who doesn't really seem to take any rubbish from anyone. We can tell she is very working class typical Mancunian girl this comes across through her accent also she doesn't seem to be very well educated and a bit naive.
-The way the girl is talking straight in to the Camera gives the film a documentary style
-When  the audience see her mum all there questions an feeling about her are confirmed about what kind of girl she is as we see her mum is a single mum living on a council estate.
- As the girl continues to talk the audience feeling change slightly as she doesn't seem as innocent as thought in the beginning because of the bad language she repeated uses.
-The way she talks about her dad portrays the kind of relationship she has with him, she talks about it making the audience think it is quite a good daughter and father relationship although the clips shown of her with her father shows the girl being left alone and her father not really caring for her at all even though this is the case she still seems to talk quite highly of him and acts like she doesn't care about being neglected by her father.
-The girl seems  a lot older the 13 or at least she seems to think so, this is quite sweet, it something the audience quite like about her. Another reason this girl will be liked by the audience is the fact she seems to be normal 'what you see is what you get' she is someone a young audience can relate to.
-When the girl is left alone outside the pub she starts to sing. Singing seems to be her escape as she seems to go in to her own little world when she sings it quite sad.
-When the girl is seen on the bus with her friends the audience are reminded that although the girl is quite mouthy se still is just a young girls that still has childish dreams of becoming a singer.
- There is not continuity with in the shots this was maybe done on purpose as it is maybe a reflection of her life showing that nothing is ever the same for her it is always changing whether she likes it or not showing insecurity.
-When the girl talks to the lady in the shop she is quite cheeky although she is clever about it as she noticed the shop assistant was looking down on her and she turned the situation round and mad the shop assistant look stupid.- in this scene we are reminded she is still quite immature in the was she smells the perfume.
-Through the way she talking about her mum and the language she uses, we sense she has some very bad feelings towards her mother although she is more in common with her mum then she thinks as her mum also seems like she wants to escape this cold life on a estate in manchester as she is scratching out her scratch card.
-When the girl talks to her dad we see she isn't as hard faced as she portrays we see her vunerablity.
-As the girl is walking she seems to be getting more and more isolated from the main town. Its a pathetic fallacy as the whether is dull and grey and it looks quite cold which is a reflection of her life and the way she is feeling inside.
-The carries on talking and we hear quite a shocking story about how her own mother killed her dog of which she loved. This just proves the kind  of person her mum is to do something like that to a poor animal furthermore it show just how much she loves her children to do that to them.
-When it is finally revealed to the audience where the girl was going and what she had in the bag it is a total shock.
-It shows the girls is a product of her environment and she doesn't really known any different, its a vicious circle and she hasn't really been taught right from wrong.
-The audience also feel very deceived as the girl totally isn't as innocent as we thought she was.
-The silence at the end is crucial as it is a silence of realization it make you really focus on what exactly has just happened as it happened all so fast, although the message is still very powerful.
-The way she throws the baby mimics the way in which she was thrown in to the world.
-The plastic bag represents her it flows away and is free for a bit but then get trapped again i.e. she is not going to be able to get out of this life she is in especially after what she has done.
-Throughout this film the girl wasn't given a name, this was most likely done on purpose as it shows her insignificance in the world she's in.

'Rubber Johnny' By Chris Cunningham

Rubber Johnny is a six-minute experimentle short film and music video directed by Chris Cunningham in 2005, using music composed by Aphex Twin .

This short film I found very abstract it was weird and slightly scary. The whole film was shot in the dark with a few shots of a alien dog creature, none of it seemed to make sense. I personally wouldn’t class this film, as a short film it is more like a music video. There isn’t really a story line at all which is why it is more like a music video. There are also a lot of special effects used which is quite unconventional for a short film as they tend to be quite simple usually. The director Chris Cunningham appears in this short film as the alien that isn’t usually as many short films have unknown actors in them. As this sort film is so random it make is even better as a short film doesn’t have to be a structured film with and equilibrium structure it can be just an idea, which is what this is.

'Bouncer' By Geoff Thomson

Geoff Thompson's Bafta nominated short film 'Bouncer.' The film stars Ray Winstone and asks "What do you see when you look into the face of a nightclub doorman?"

I found the short film ‘The Bouncer’ very hard-hitting and powerful, despite the slightly humorous dialogue used. I especially enjoyed the editing techniques used, as it really stops and makes you think what life is for a bouncer. It raises various enigmas. The hidden messages and further meanings conform to the short film conventions. The whole storyline takes the audience in a full circle and slightly confuses them. Short films are good seeing as there are no rules and boundaries.

'Horny' Directed By Stephen Hopkins

A young woman uses her sexuality to avenge a businessman's sleazy desire of her. Directed by Stephen Hopkins, Starring Denise Van Outen.

I found the short film ‘Horny’ was very humorous, I think it was the whole simplicity of it i.e. a girl on a tube, talking and arousing a man. I found it funny as there is a lot of plain shots of peoples faces and expressions. It kind of lightens the situation and makes you feel like you are really there. This shows how good this short film is as it attracts the audiences attention. The track playing in the background is very important as it creates and sets the atmosphere. For instance when the girls walking through the underground crowd, it’s at a fairly fast pace and then gradually slows down, when the suited man gets embarrassed. Overall I think this short film is quite successful.
