'Steal Away' By Charles McDougall Lesson Notes
-When this short film begins the audience immediately think that this film is going to be about some kind of heist, the music n the background and the 'gangster' looking man we can see parts of -the man is actually mystery at this point
-The title is quite subtle but is kept with in the story.
-The P.O.V shots make the audience feel part of the film.
-Whoever this man is he is a religious man as there is a cross tied around the car mirror -it is quite a subliminal object as at this point it is unknown to the audience how important religion is in this short film.
-The action happens 1 minute in to the film it happened so quickly it is quite difficult to take in exactly what has happened
-Even after the action the Characters are still kept quite mysterious
-Suspense and anxiety is built up very well as a exaggerated gun sot is heard but it isn't revealed straight away who got shot, to emphise this everything is slowed down so now the audience can realise what is going on and what has just happened.
-There is a shot of the women looking back hoping it wasn't her boyfriend who got shot, in the frame the stations signs as visible reading 'way out' could this possibly be an underlying message to this women
-The women's whole domina seems to change as she is reunited with her man.
-The lighting gets darker as they begin to run through the underground could this could maybe mean something bad is going to happen and there is danger ahead
-It is confirmed to the audience that these to people are in fact a couple and are very much in love with each other-this is shown through there body language when they are together and kiss.
-They both seem very childish over the money as it is clear and the man Michael even says we can't even spend it because it was not stained.
-The red colour of the money is quite symbolic showing blood money as it was stolen and somebody has died for it.
-It also become clear these to people aren't hardcore criminals and they mugged the man for the thrill of it and it wasn't planned at all and they didn't know what was in the case they stole.
-The women seems a lot more childish then the man and perhaps a little naive
-They are a very in love couple and seem very intimate-they can't keep their hands off each other
-These two people seem very weird as although someone just got shot, they don't care and seem very excited from taking the risk.
-As they are on the desolate dark underground station it is thought maybe there plans have gone wrong as they weren't expecting the train
-The train approaches very quietly and slowly it also looks as if no one is one it, it is a white train which is very unusual, it is as if it's a ghost train.
-When the couple get on the train it seems as they have just stepped on to a quite busy late night tube. There is normal looking people on this tube however it is a scary coincidence that there happens to be a preacher on the tube talking about sins as they have just committed one and a boy washing peoples feet and cleansing them.
- The Bible the preacher is holding is red-red symbolises bad things i.e. Murder, blood etc.
-The couples reaction on their faces show them to be quite freaked out by this all the girl more then Michael.
-The lighting is very light on the tube everything seems very clean.
-Money is also a theme i this films as the women offers money to the boy washing her feet and he refuses-it showing the idea that money can pay off anything.
-The preacher begins to sing a song of which he repeats the words 'Steal away' this not only connects with the title of the film but it is weird as they just stole off somebody.
-The man Michael clearly starts to feel guilt as he starts to wash the hurt boys feet
-At this point the audience must be feeling quite confused as this short film seems to be changing genre and really isn't what they thought it would be and the crucifix at the beginning was a crucial subliminal sign as to what this film was.
-When the audience see Michael watching the boys feet they begin to feel differently about him and realise he isn't a cold criminal.
-It is clear Michael's girlfriend has problems letting him go and when she seems him washing the boys feet she looks at him with quite a disgusted face.
-As Michael washes the boys feet lights start flashing and violently flickering everywhere on the tubes carriage, it is almost like voodoo or the pass over in the Bible although no body seems to really notice it happening.
-It is almost as if they have been cleansed of there signs as after the lights turn on properly the women and Michael's clothes a all clean and there is not trace of the red dye.
-It to them must have seemed like a miracle has happened ad they have got away with they crime and have a second chance.
-They seem to be new people when they step off the tube as they give the money to a homeless person.
-when they get off the tube and go towards the barriers Michael is let through however the women isn't she is told to wait in another line where the other people who got refused stand-the penny then drops for the audience as being on that tube was like judgement day.
-Michael goes up the escalator and goes to heaven of which still isn't the heaven we would all think off as it seems quite bare and cold- it was infact Michael that got shot he has escaped hell that is earth and is in a better place and was cleansed of his sin unlike his girlfriend who now is in hell on earth and has to deal with the consequences HOWEVER this can be seen in a different way as it can also be thought the girl has been given a second chance to live her life and do the right thing.
-This film had a very religious thought it is also thought that Michael bared resemblance to Jesus as he died for his girlfriend like Jesus died for us as now she doesn't really have to deal with the consequences as he has died and if he didn't they may have got caught.
