'Avant-Garde'

Avant-Garde is a french saying which when used in English refers to people that are experimental, innovative and cutting edge especially in the art, culture and politics.

Avant-Garde expresses pushing of the boundaries of what is perceived as the norm or just the plain old ordinary generally in the cultural world.

The notion of the existence of the Avant-Garde is considered by some to be a statement of modernism, as distinct from postmodernism. Many artists have aligned themselves with the avant-garde movement and still continue to do so.

The concept of Avant-Garde refers exclusively to marginalized artists, writers, composers and thinkers whose work is not only opposed to mainstream commercial values, but often has an abrasive social or political edge therefore to most people would seem weird as it is something most people just aren't used to seeing.

Some examples of Avant-Garde directors are:-
-Maya Deren- 'Meshes of the afternoon' (1943)
-Ernie Gehr- 'Serene Velocity' (1970)
-Tony Conrad- 'The Flicker' (1965)
-Jonas Mekas- 'Walden (diaries, Notes and sketches)' (1969)

The short list about is just a few however if you follow this link you can see more Avant-Garde directors and there work:- Avant-Garde Directors
